Great Worship Leaders Are Made

WORSHIP LEADERS are the fruit of a PASTOR’S ministry. The more time the PASTOR is willing to invest in my life, the better I am able to partner with him in the ministry. I’m in the ministry today because a PASTOR was willing to invest in me. He sent me to Bible classes. He gave me opportunities to teach, to lead, to pray, to counsel. He encouraged me to grow and learn. He saw me as an investment. He ministered to my wife and I during tough times in our marriage. He asked me about my personal time in the Scriptures. He kept me accountable to GOD. He was a true FRIEND and PASTOR.

Only One Mode

One of the things that we need to keep in mind is that WORSHIP is sung prayer or prayers set to music. Therefore, maintaining a prayer attitude during all aspects of worship is key to FLOWING as a team. My attitude is to worship whether I am in rehearsal, sound check, or service. I don’t go into musician mode and then into WORSHIP mode. For me, I just have one mode that I go into—WORSHIP.

Man's Natural Bent Is To Make God In My Image

People say, “I want a GOD I can relate to, that I can understand. I don’t like the idea of a GOD who is beyond my ability to understand Him, to fully comprehend Him.” So, I (people) dumb GOD down to my level. I (people) dumb GOD down to fit into my life experience. That is why the GOD many of us worship is too small to help us deal with every day life. That is why the GOD we worship can’t heal or do miracles. That is why we are surprised when He does.

Worship Is Spiritual

In John 4, Jesus told the woman at the well that GOD is looking for worshippers who worship in Spirit and Truth. (John 4:24) What does it mean to worship in Spirit? Does it mean to worship with a lot of exuberance? Does it mean that worship can be “of the flesh?”

To understand this statement you need to look at John 3. Jesus is talking to Rabbi Nick. He tells Him that what is born of Spirit is Spirit and what is born of flesh is flesh (John 3:6). He tells Rabbi Nick that you need to be born again. (John 3:3)

This is what Jesus means when He says that GOD is looking for worshippers who worship in Spirit. It doesn’t mean that God is looking for excited worshippers... although He is. It doesn’t mean that you can worship in “unspiritual” or “carnal” ways... although you can. What it means is that worship is the natural response that arises from someone who has been born again.

“It seems that in many places across the world, the worship scene can tend towards overindulgence with worshippers seeking the experience of being in worship rather than being changed by worship." --- Darlene Zschech

"It is in the process of being worshipped that God communicates His presence to men." --- C.S. Lewis
